Science Spaces Workshop in Vietnam

Teams of high school students from three schools in Ho Chi Minh City together with guides from IMAGINARY developed science exhibits, which will be presented after the workshop in their schools. The workshop was organized by the Goetheinstitut of Vietnam and took place in the Vietnamese German University (VGU).

Discover Mathina-Land in Ludwigshafen

Mathina is an interactive story with many chapters introducing children and young people to mathematical ideas in a playful way. At the side of fictional characters, they experience adventures, solve puzzles and play games - at the same time, mathematical concepts are learned and applied intuitively:

  • Logi-City (logical and abstract reasoning)
  • Buccaneers’ island (cryptography)
  • Symmetry fair (symmetries) 
  • The land of the firebirds (spatial visualization)

In this one-hour workshop, we introduce selected chapters to test how students receive the material. We hope for feedback and suggestions for improvement before we publish Mathina.

Berliner U-Bahn - ein Ausflug in die Fahrplanoptimierung

Der Fahrplan aus dem Jahr 2005 wurde von Matheon erstellt, einem Forschungszentrum am Mathematischen Insitut der TU Berlin. Der Schlüssel waren hochmoderne kombinatorische Optimisierungstechnicken. Das Berliner U-Bahn-Netz wurde durch einen Graph mit verschiedenen Nebenbedingungen modelliert, dessen Knoten die Stationen darstellen, die Kanten entsprechen den Verbindungswegen. Die optimale Lösung für ein funktionierendes Nahverkehrssystem (das also sowohl die Wartezeit als auch die Anzahl der Züge minimiert) ist in der Menge aller möglichen Lösungen versteckt, die die Nebenbedingungen erfüllen. Allerdings ist diese Menge viel zu groß, um sie in Gänze zu untersuchen, selbst mithilfe neuester Computertechnik. Clevere mathematische Methoden liefern mächtige Algorithmen, die große Teile dieser Menge als nicht-optimal identifizieren können und sich die Suche deshalb auf ein kleineres Gebiet beschränken kann.

IMAGINARY at Bar-Ilan University

This exhibition is part of a project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research under the brandname Research in Germany. This is the second of two IMAGINARY exhibitions in Israel in 2015/2016. The first exhibition was at the Clore Garden of Science at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot until mid of December. 

The exhibition is open Sunday to Friday, from Thursday the 24th of December until Friday the 29th of January. During that period the exhibition is closed on two days - on Sunday Dec 27 and on Thursday Dec 31  (due to other events in the center).

The entrance is free of charge.

There is a cafeteria inside the venue so that visitors have the opportunity to sit down and  buy refreshments.

Big groups have to coordinate with Arkadius Kalka.

The exhibition is accompanied by a SURFER competition for Israel which continues until 12 April 2016:

IMAGINARY kommt in den Norden und Osten - künftige Ausstellungen in Dänemark, Russland und Norwegen

Freitag, den 5. April, wird eine spezielle IMAGINARY-Ausstellung von Skulpturen und Bildern zum ersten Mal in Dänemark im Steno Science Museum in Aarhus gezeigt werden (Informationen dazu finden Sie hier). Sie wird bis zum 31. August 2013 zu sehen sein. Dann wird die Ausstellungsreihe in Russland durch eine einwöchige Ausstellung in Puschtschino (einer Kleinstadt südlich von Moskau) fortgesetzt werden. Dies ist die fünfte Ausstellung in Russland. Sie wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der deutschen Botschaft in Moskau (und anderen) organisiert. Im Mai reist IMAGINARY nach Norwegen - ebenfalls zum ersten Mal - und wird dort nach den Feierlichkeiten zur Verleihung des Abelpreises in Oslo gezeigt. Die Ausstellung wird in einem Wissenschaftsmuseum in Trondheim präsentiert - mehr Details dazu hier.

Und falls Sie gerade in Spanien sein sollten (und den Jakobsweg gehen), lassen Sie es sich nicht entgehen, in der Universitätskirche neben der Kathedrale von Santiago de Compostela vorbeizuschauen, um die dortige RSME-IMAGINARY-Ausstellung zu sehen, die bis zum 16. Mai geöffnet ist.

IMAGINARY Israel wird angekündigt

Anlässlich des 50-jährigen Bestehens diplomatischer Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Israel wird das Projekt IMAGINARY Israel des Mathematischen Forschungsinstituts Oberwolfach (MFO) angekündigt. Dies geschieht in Verbindung mit einem Besuch der deutschen Bundesministerin für Bildung und Forschung Johanna Wanka beim Weizmann Institute of Science am 10. Februar. Das Projekt besteht aus zwei Mathematikausstellungen für die breite Öffentlichkeit und zwei Workshops, die sich hauptsächlich an junge Mathematikerinnen und Mathematiker aus Deutschland und Israel richten.

Mit diesem Projekt erhält IMAGINARY die Gelegenheit, mit einem ausgezeichneten Wissenschaftskommunikationszentrum (Clore Garden of Science des Davidson Institute of Science Education des Weizmann Institute of Science) zusammenzuarbeiten, um Erfahrungen auszutauschen darüber, wie man inspirierende Ausstellungen organisiert und aktuelle Forschung an ein breites Publikum kommuniziert. Die Zusammenarbeit wird zu einer ersten IMAGINARY-Ausstellung in Israel im Sommer 2015 im Clore Garden of Science in Rehovot führen, die von einer zweiten Ausstellung in Tel Aviv von Ende 2015 bis Anfang 2016 gefolgt wird.

Die genauen Daten für die beiden geplanten Ausstellungen werden  noch bekanntgegeben.

Wir freuen uns, mitteilen zu können, dass IMAGINARY Israel vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) gefördert wird und im Rahmen der Kampagne “Research in Germany” des BMBF organisiert wird. Ziel ist, die traditionell sehr gute Forschungszusammenarbeit zwischen den beiden Ländern zu stärken.
