Four Math Sculptures

This is the 3d-data for the 3d-printing of four small math sculptures, whose shape is described by precise mathematical formulas. All four represent classical mathematical curves or surfaces, namely the following: Barth Sextic, Dini Surface, Parabolic Cylinder and Plane (called Tülle), Rational Normal Curve. The data is in STL-format, and have a wall thickness of approximately 0.7mm, and a wire thickness of 3mm.

SURFER in Math Art, Education and Science Communication

SURFER is a program designed to make everybody feel like a mathematician. The program is a bridge between art and math. Everybody can participate in the dialogue between algebraic equations and pictures of algebraic surfaces in an interactive and aesthetic way. In this paper we will introduce the program and its potential in math art, education and communication. The program was originally developed for the IMAGINARY exhibition, a project by the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach.

How to make an IMAGINARY Exhibition - Bridges 2013 Paper

This paper presented at the BRIDGES conference 2013 provides a brief overview of the main steps needed for organizing a math art exhibition. As IMAGINARY visited more locations, we realized the need for providing some hints and advice based on the experience of former exhibitions. Our goal is to motivate you to make your own exhibition and to contribute to the IMAGINARY platform with your own exhibits.

Martmatics

Wo steht die Mittagssonne?

Haben Sie schon einmal festgestellt, dass die Sonne nicht immer zur selben Zeit des Tages am höchsten steht? Und am 10. Dezember ist der Sonnenuntergang beispielsweise schon früher als zur Wintersonnenwende, dem kürzesten Tag des Jahres.
Wenn man jeden Tag exakt um 12 Uhr mittags die Sonne fotografiert, stellt man fest, dass ihre Position eine Achterkurve beschreibt, die man ‚Analemma‘ nennt. Ihre Umkehrpunkte sind an den Tagen der Winter- und Sommersonnenwende.

Tektonische Platten

Die Temperatur nimmt vom Erdkern zur Erdoberfläche hin ab, wodurch es zu einer Wärmebewegung im Erdmantel kommt: Das wärmere Magma strömt vom Kern zur Oberfläche und kühlt dort ab. Daraufhin sinkt es wieder zurück in Richtung Erdkern, und ein neuer Zyklus beginnt. Das wiederum bewirkt eine Bewegung der starren tektonischen Platten an der Erdoberfläche, wodurch sich Spannungen und Scherkräfte entwickeln.

Aus diesem Grund berechnen und optimieren Mathematiker Bewegungs- und Umlaufbahnen von Raumsonden mit immer ausgereifterer Technik.
