Am 2. Februar 2014 öffnete die erste permanente Ausstellung des Museu de Matemàtiques de Catalunya (MMACA) in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona) ihre Türen, nach über 6 Jahren Wanderausstellungen in verschiedenen Städten Spaniens.
Am 5. Februar fand die offizielle Eröffung statt, die gut besucht war und von Mathematikern und Gruppen des Bildungswesens Kataloniens unterstützt wurde. Der Vorsitzende der MMACA Josep Rey umriss die Geschichte dieses engagierten Projekts, und Anton Aubanell hielt einen humorvollen Vortrag über Seifenblasen und -häute.
Die „Experiencias matemáticas“ genannte Ausstellung wird auf über 300 Quadratmetern gezeigt und besteht hauptsächlich aus sehr interaktiven Exponaten, die von Hand aus Holz gefertigt wurden, beinhaltet aber auch virtuelle Ausstellungsstücke wie „The Sphere of the Earth“, das von IMAGINARY für den Wettbewerb Mathematics of Planet Earth entwickelt wurde.
Obwohl die Ausstellung nur mittwochs und sonntags der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich ist, wurde sie am ersten Tag von 500 und am zweiten von 200 Interessierten besucht. An den übrigen Tagen finden mit den Schulen abgestimmte Veranstaltungen statt, für die es schon eine lange Warteliste gibt.
Die Ausstellung stellt einen großen Schritt in Richtung des Ziels eines eigentlichen Mathematikmuseums dar und zeigt, dass in Katalonien - wie in vielen anderen Teilen der Welt - das öffentliche Interesse an und die Faszination durch Mathematik zunehmen.
