Four Math Sculptures

This is the 3d-data for the 3d-printing of four small math sculptures, whose shape is described by precise mathematical formulas. All four represent classical mathematical curves or surfaces, namely the following: Barth Sextic, Dini Surface, Parabolic Cylinder and Plane (called Tülle), Rational Normal Curve. The data is in STL-format, and have a wall thickness of approximately 0.7mm, and a wire thickness of 3mm.

SURFER in Math Art, Education and Science Communication

SURFER is a program designed to make everybody feel like a mathematician. The program is a bridge between art and math. Everybody can participate in the dialogue between algebraic equations and pictures of algebraic surfaces in an interactive and aesthetic way. In this paper we will introduce the program and its potential in math art, education and communication. The program was originally developed for the IMAGINARY exhibition, a project by the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach.

How to make an IMAGINARY Exhibition - Bridges 2013 Paper

This paper presented at the BRIDGES conference 2013 provides a brief overview of the main steps needed for organizing a math art exhibition. As IMAGINARY visited more locations, we realized the need for providing some hints and advice based on the experience of former exhibitions. Our goal is to motivate you to make your own exhibition and to contribute to the IMAGINARY platform with your own exhibits.

Martmatics

Martmatics is a project to show how Mathematics and Art have been related to each other throughout history and how they are still linked today. There are many bonds and the authors have chosen the most attractive and significant ones. You will find a brochure and also an activity book with excercices to accompany the examples from the brochure.

Où est le Soleil à midi ?

Avez-vous déjà remarqué que le milieu du jour (ou midi solaire) n’est pas toujours à la même heure sur votre montre ? Le Soleil se couche plus tôt le 10 décembre qu’au solstice d’hiver. Observez le Soleil à midi chaque semaine. Sur un an, sa position décrit un grand 8, appelé analemme, dont les extrémités sont aux solstices d’hiver et d’été.

La tectonique des plaques

Du noyau interne à la surface, la Terre se refroidit et entraine des mouvements de convection dans le manteau terrestre. La matière chaude monte et se refroidit à la surface. Elle replonge alors dans le manteau où elle se réchauffe à nouveau et recommence un nouveau cycle. La présence de plaques rigides en surface crée des cisaillements.

Télécommunications, navigation, météorologie…, mais aussi téléphones cellulaires, GPS, Internet, autant de raisons d’envoyer des satellites autour de la Terre. Pour cela, les mathématiciens sélectionnent et optimisent les trajectoires et les orbites des engins spatiaux avec des méthodes de plus en plus sophistiquées.
