IMAGINARY at the ICM in Seoul: exhibiton, panel, donauction
13 Ago. 2014

IMAGINARY is present at the ICM 2014 in Seoul with the biggest exhibition so far, NIMS-IMAGINARY and a special panel titled “Mathematics communication for the future - a vision slam”. Furthermore IMAGINARY is collaboration partner of the DonAuction, a fundraising project for mathematicians in countries with lower scientific infrastructure.

The exhibition is organized by the National Institute of Mathematical Sciences (NIMS) in collaboration with the ICM committee and the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach. It features the best of all IMAGINARY modules of the last years including new software, images, films and sculptures. The exhibition stall is open for the general public and more than 10 000 visitors are expected, among them many local visitors and schools. The exhibition includes 9 huge touch screen panels with a dozen interactive programs, a printed picture gallery and a digital picture and film gallery on the latest mathematical animations and visualizations and a sculputre gallery with 3D prints. Trained guides are available at each station to introduce you to the mathematical background of the exhibits. More details and first pictures of the exhibition can be found at www. imaginary.org/nims.

In the vision slam “Mathematics communication for the future”, professionals in the field of mathematics communication will present their visions for future mathematics communication. You will hear different perspectives from renowned mathematicians, a young researcher and a mathematics teacher. Each speaker has 10 minutes to catch the audience’s attention and transmit novel thoughts and ideas. Enter with a curious mind! After the vision slam, everybody is invited to visit the NIMS-IMAGINARY exhibition shown at the conference. Mathematicians, contributors and team members of the local exhibition present in Seoul will guide you and talk about details and insights into the exhibits.

Speakers
• Gert-Martin Greuel, University of Kaiserslautern, Germany
• Cedric Villani, Institut Henri Poincaré, France
• David Grünberg, International School of Lausanne, Switzerland
• Carla Cederbaum, MFO and University of Tübingen, Germany
• Hyungju Park, NIMS and POSTECH, South Korea

The panel will be held from 15:30-16:30, August 20 (Wed), in the room 402.

IMAGINARY is collaborating at the IMU-sponsored “DonAuction” (donation with auction), held during the ICM 2014 for the first time. The auction will be available online during the ICM and will culminate with an actual physical auction event on August 20 at 5:30 pm.

More than twenty different mathematical objects will be available in an “all-pay” or Chinese auction. For each US $5.00 or 5,000 KRW (KRW = South Korean Won), participants will receive a ticket that they can put in the “hat” for an object on auction. The contributions will go to the Adopt-a-Mathematics-Graduate-Student program.

Each of the diverse mathematical objects will be unique, have aesthetic appeal, and mathematical meaning. Some of them will be special prints of pictures from the IMAGINARY galleries – designed by or in collaboration with prominent mathematicians and signed by them, some will be 3D prints, some will be objects of mathematically historical events, etc.

Please participate and donate! Details on how to donauct and on all the objects can be found here: http://donauction.org/

Today, February 7th 2018, is called e-day, because e is approximately 2.718, and this date is written 2/7/18 in some parts of the world. We prepared a toy-site listing the first 60.000 digits of e and help you find your birthday in it! We can even find your name within the digits of e, along with the complete works of William Shakespeare, the ending of Game of Thrones (spoiler alert), the full text of the Wikipedia from the year 2030 or what you’ll have tomorrow for breakfast…Leer más
