The Sphere of the Earth

This exhibit explores the science of cartography and the geometry of the sphere. The geometric properties of the sphere and the plane are essentially different, and no map can faithfully represent the Earth without distortion. This module goes through some of these properties, comparing different map projections and trying to get a feeling of what “distortion” means and why is there such impossibility for a “perfect map”.

Calibration of Flood Models

To predict floods using three dimensional solutions of the Navier‐Stokes equations is completely impractical because of computation time and the large numbers of parameters that would need to be specified for such a model. The models which are actually used to predict flooding are so simplified that the parameters do not necessarily match a physical value. Parameter values must be calibrated by assessing the ability of the model to predict past events for which we have data.

Double Pendulum

A double pendulum is a combination of two penduli that create a chaotic behaviour. This exhibit is a real physical double pendulum built and planned by a metal constructor with the idea to be safe for exhibitions and to be as fluid and surprising as possible in its movements.
